FS #80: Nature in Franciscan Spirituality, Part 10 – Jun 25 - Homily - Fr Terrance
Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jun 25, 2024, on how St. Francis saw Jesus in all of creation, viewing nature as a reflection of Christ's presence, inspiring a deep, Christ-centered spirituality. This is a continuation of his series on Franciscan spirituality and the subsection, "Nature in Franciscan Spirituality," emphasizing the Franciscan understanding and appreciation of nature and how it should lead us to God.
Father continues his series on Franciscan spirituality by explaining how St. Francis of Assisi saw the presence of Jesus Christ in all aspects of creation. Creation is like a book or a concert of voices that must be deciphered and understood, a task that poet...

Oh no, what happened to the short little prayer after the Salve Regina prayer? "V. Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei genitrix. R. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi." And what about after that prayer? "Oremus: Déus, cújus Unigénitus, per vítam, mortem et resurrectiónem Súam nobis salútis ætérnæ præmia comparávit: concéde, quæsumus; ut, hæc mystéria sanctíssimo beátæ Maríæ Virginis Rosário recoléntes; et imitémur quod cóntinent, et quod promíttunt, assequámur. Per eúndem Chrístum Dóminum nóstrum. Amen." It also would have been nice if you actually named each Mystery. Even if you would have done 3 separate videos for each set of mysteries.

Luke 18. The Lord gave a parable. And the parable was of two men that went into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, a religionist, a moralist, and the other was a tax collector, which is an outcast. And this is the way the parable went: “The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people-robbers, evildoers, adulterers-or even like this tax collector.’” That is a typical prayer of a moralist. “I thank You, God, I’m not like other sinners. In fact, I fast twice a week. I give tithes.” Just checking in to let God know he’s still as holy as he’s always been. That’s the moralist. On the other hand, the tax collector, which is the outcast, standing afar off, will not lift his eyes unto heaven. He is beating on his chest and crying, “God, be merciful to me a sinner.” And Jesus said that man went to his house justified rather than the other. Morality in and of itself is a damning thing. You’d be better off to be immoral and face the reality of your needs so that you would come to a Savior, than to live under the illusion that because you have a moral code on the outside, all is well on the inside between you and God. And you see it here. You see it with the Jews. You see it with the Roman Catholics. You see it with Mormons. You see it with liberal Protestants. And you see with the moralists and religionists of the world who pursue a moral approach to life but do not have in their lives the living Christ in them. And any man without having Christ in them will be judged greatly. And God has ordained a day in which He will judge the world by Jesus whom He raised from the dead. But the Good News is there’s forgiveness for sin to those who truly repent. And real repentance is realizing you’re destitute from any righteousness and you cry out to God for a righteousness you desperately need, which you know you do not have and cannot earn. It’s a beggar’s position because you are overwhelmed with your sin and you cannot do anything about it. Just like the tax collector beating on his chest for mercy. And you come humbly to God and cry out for mercy and forgiveness, and God will reach out by the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, which satisfied His justice with regard to your sin, because Christ had lived a perfect life and fulfilled every laws that were required. And God in His grace will grant you saving faith.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. It's important to recognize that Jesus' parable in Luke 18 teaches humility and reliance on God's mercy rather than self-righteousness. However, equating this with the idea that morality is inherently damning and thus painting groups like Catholics as missing the mark is misleading. The Catholic Church teaches that faith and works together are vital for salvation (James 2:14-26). For more on this topic, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/what-the-early-church-believed-faith-and-works. Thank you for your comment. The titles "Mediatrix of all graces" and "Advocate" for Mary do not imply that she replaces Jesus. Rather, they highlight her unique role in God's plan of salvation as the mother of Jesus. All grace comes from Jesus Christ, but Catholics believe Mary has a special role in distributing these graces due to her close relationship with Him. For more on this, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/mary-mother-of-god Also see Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 969 - Mary's maternal role - www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/969.htm I hope this helps - Friar Roderic

I have noticed several aspects of the Bible that seem to contradict the Catholic faith. Personally, I believe that salvation comes through Jesus alone and not through any church. As a Christian who does not affiliate with any specific denomination, I have some concerns about certain Catholic teachings. Here are some Catholic doctrines and practices that critics often argue lack direct biblical support: 1. Praying to Mary and the Saints**: Catholics seek the intercession of Mary and the saints, while critics argue that the Bible instructs prayer to be directed to God alone. 2. The Immaculate Conception: The belief that Mary was conceived without original sin is not explicitly stated in the Bible. 3. The Assumption of Mary: The doctrine that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven is not found in the Bible. 4. Papal Infallibility: The belief in the Pope's infallibility in official teachings on faith and morals when speaking ex cathedra is not explicitly found in Scripture. 5. **Transubstantiation**: The doctrine that the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ during the Eucharist is not directly outlined in the Bible. 6. Purgatory: The belief in a state of purification after death before entering heaven is not explicitly described in the Bible. 7. Indulgences: The practice of granting indulgences, which are said to reduce the temporal punishment for sins, is not directly supported by Scripture. 8. The Seven Sacraments: While some sacraments have biblical roots, the specific formulation and number (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, Holy Orders) are not explicitly detailed in the Bible. 9. The Veneration of Relics: The practice of venerating the physical remains of saints or their personal effects is not explicitly supported by Scripture. 10. The Rosary: The specific prayers and structure of the Rosary, particularly the repeated Hail Marys, are not found in the Bible. 11. The Use of Statues and Images: The use of statues and images for veneration is seen by some as conflicting with biblical injunctions against idolatry. These teachings and practices are based on Catholic tradition, the teachings of the Church Fathers, and Church councils, which Catholics believe are guided by the Holy Spirit and are part of the living transmission of the faith. However, critics argue that they are not explicitly supported by Scripture alone. The New Testament does not include any verses where Mary explicitly says that Jesus gives her salvation. However, there are verses that highlight Mary’s recognition of God's salvation and her role in God’s plan, such as in the Magnificat, found in the Gospel of Luke. Here is the relevant passage: Luke 1:46-55 (NIV): 46 And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me- holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors." In this passage, Mary acknowledges God as her Savior, which implies recognition of her need for salvation and God's provision of it. Although this does not explicitly mention Jesus by name, it is understood within the Christian tradition that Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promise of salvation. I would appreciate your honest response to these points. Many thanks. Best regards, Peter

Hi Peter, Thank you for sharing your well-articulated concerns. Here are responses to each of your points, showing how these Catholic doctrines and practices are indeed supported by Scripture and tradition: 1. **Praying to Mary and the Saints**: Catholics believe in the intercession of saints based on passages like Revelation 5:8, where the saints present our prayers to God. For more, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/the-intercession-of-the-saints and the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2679 - "Mary is the perfect Orans (pray-er), a figure of the Church." 2. **The Immaculate Conception**: Luke 1:28 refers to Mary as "full of grace," implying a special grace from conception. Also see Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 490 - www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/490.htm. 3. **The Assumption of Mary**: Revelation 12 speaks of a woman "clothed with the sun," which Catholic tradition associates with Mary. Also see Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 966 - www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/966.htm. 4. **Papal Infallibility**: Based on Matthew 16:18-19, where Jesus gives Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven. For more, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/papal-infallibility. 5. **Transubstantiation**: John 6:51-58 is foundational, where Jesus declares the bread is His body. See Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 1376 - www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/1376.htm. 6. **Purgatory**: 1 Corinthians 3:15 and 2 Maccabees 12:46 (a book Martin Luther removed from the Protestant Bible) support the concept of purification after death. For more, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/purgatory. 7. **Indulgences**: Rooted in the practice of penance (Matthew 16:19). For more, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/myths-about-indulgences. 8. **The Seven Sacraments**: All sacraments have biblical foundations. For example, Baptism (Matthew 28:19), Eucharist (Luke 22:19), and others. See Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 1113-1134 - www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p2s1c1a2.htm#1113 9. **The Veneration of Relics**: Acts 19:11-12 shows the early Church using relics for healing. Also see Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 1674 - www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/1674.htm . 10. **The Rosary**: It is a Christ-centered prayer that meditates on the life of Jesus and Mary. For more, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/how-to-pray-the-rosary . 11. **The Use of Statues and Images**: The prohibition in Exodus 20:4 is against idolatry, not respectful images. See Numbers 21:8-9 for the bronze serpent made by God's command. For more, see Catholic Answers: www.catholic.com/tract/do-catholics-worship-statues . Regarding the Immaculate Conception, your concern is what originally was the *Catholic* objection to the doctrine, that although it was a well-established Catholic doctrine (and shared by the Eastern Orthodox who call her the Panagia, purely holy, no sin) that she never committed sin and even that she was saved from sin soon after her conception, all that is fine, but because of Luke 1:47, you can’t, as a good Catholic, say that she was *conceived* without original sin (Immaculate Conception) since she would not, then, need a savior. The accepted answer to that objection was formulated by the Franciscan theologian John Duns Scotus way back in about 1300 AD who points out that the Immaculate Conception means that Mary was *saved* from falling into original sin. As such, Mary is even more thankful to God for being saved from falling into the pit of original sin than we who were saved *after* falling into it. Both she and us are saved by Jesus' redemption on the cross, we, after his crucifixion and resurrection, and she, in God’s foreknowledge of it. This combined with arguments like “It was fitting that Jesus would create His Mother without sin, He has the power to do so, so He did it” paved the way for the doctrine to be accepted with proper feast days and liturgies and eventually declared a dogma in 1854, dogmatic decloration being the highest form of approval of an already established doctrine. Also in your concerns, you bring up the idea that all doctrines must be “explicitly supported by Scripture alone”. This idea is not supported by the writings of the early Christians, nor by the modern Catholics or Eastern Orthodox. Rather it was introduced by Martin Luther to support his other novel ideas based on his novel interpretation of the Bible, which ironically was then passed on as a tradition alongside scripture ever since. The Bible says it is sufficient for salvation but never does it say that all doctrines and clarifications thereof are found exclusively and explicitly in the Bible. Rather it says, the pillar and foundation of truth is the Church, 1 Tim 3:15. I hope this helps clarify these teachings for you. God bless - Friar Roderic

Such a divinely inspired homily on the availability of confession. It will be prudent if the bishops sent this homily video to each church as a guideline for confession and when and how often to offer. (As long mortal sin is considered as a deadly/ seriously sin and so many Catholics. Confession at many churches only offered for 1 hour,1 day a week. The good counsel of this homily makes more sense and very practical advice. Our Lady of Mercy pray for us Amen. Holy Spirit have mercy and pray for us Amen
